Board Positions Open
In July, we will be nominating and electing new Board members. Be thinking now about volunteering yourself for a position on this creative and happy board! Next, be thinking about another person who might have the same potential for being an active Board member. More to come soon in the DIA Newsletter, OPalette. Our Nominating Commission is alive and well!
Just a note, for those who do not know this our Constitution states that the Board will meet 4 times a year. One of those times is at the Gathering. The other three times happen throughout the year. Sometimes the Board meets via conference call, other times it is important to meet face to face. There are no personal expenses for attending Board meetings; travel, room and board are picked up by the DIA.

November 2008 Update
DIA Update November 2008
Dear DIA Members,
The November chill and darkness offer us a contemplative opportunity to sink deeper into the folds of God's presence. Nature calls us to store up our resources and the U.S. economy seems to focus on tightening our belts. This is a good time to find shelter in our creativity. What can we, as artists, offer our world that is nourishing and hope filled at no cost?
Lucianne Siers, OP -DIA Board Chair

ELECTION AND MUSE MOMENTS
I'm wondering if the energy generated around the world by the election of Barack Obama, Nov. 4, has sparked any muse moments in the membership and, if so, would you be willing to share bodaciously?
Send your sharing to Carol OConnor at coconnor@columbusdominicans.org You may want to check out www.domlife.org for an overview of Dominican responses to the same invitation. Now, lets hear from the Dominican artists!
Peace, Liz Sully OP

Send Dec. Newsletter submissions to E. Michael Boyle OP at emichael@caldwell.edu Please submit your information/article no later than Nov.19th.
We received many supportive responses about the new look and contents of the newsletter. Much of it depends upon your submissions based upon your artistic and contemplative nature. We applaud your willingness to make this a viable newsletter!

MEMBERSHIP PREACHING THROUGH THE ARTS
I read Poetry at West Allis, Wisconsin's city hall on September 15th, as part of the annual CELEBRATING ART IN WEST ALLIS. A teacher at the Milwaukee Area Technical College was told of the West Allis ARTS a' Fair, called me and asked if I'd read for her writing class, many of whom have an interest in poetry. How exciting to Preach through the Arts! -Mary Ellen Paulson OP
October 2008 Board Update
Dear DIA Members,
As we enjoy the beauty of the autumn season, we can hardly ignore the economic crisis and the upcoming election swirling around us. While we may not feel the immediate pain of economic meltdown, we have certainly become aware of our connections with the rest of the world. And so as we enter into the last quarter of 2008, we find ourselves in the great unknown of what will happen. We certainly know that whatever will happen will touch our lives directly. And so, as we artists feel this unknown place and try to find an expression for it, let us walk together in faith and hope trusting our intuition and gift to lead us to another level of understanding TRUTH in the spirit of Dominic and Catherine.
Mark your calendars now: The 2009 Gathering will be held at Xavier Center, Convent Station, New Jersey, July 15-18, 2009. Featured Speaker and Facilitator for a day of reflection: Kathleen Deignan, CND, PH.D., spiritual animator and theologian who composes songs for worship and devotion. She is the founder of Iona Spirituality Institute at Iona College, New Rochelle, NY, where she is Associate Professor of Religious Studies. Check out: www.animaschola.org

Of our Dominican Colleges/Universities, how might they be encouraged to have a student representative present for the 2009 Gathering and would the college subsidize the experience? Contact Liz Sully OP at Sullyop@aol.com to continue the conversation.

April 2008
April 2008 Update
Dear DIA Members,
As April showers pour nourishment into Mother Earth, so too do we as Artists pour our creative spirits into activities that nourish the heart. Look below at the many areas of interest and action going on with us for the sake of preaching Art!
A few hopes:
We hope for the gift of fire for those who attend the Federation Convocation.
We hope for the gift of a more lasting bond with other Dominican Artists as our 4 representatives prepare for the trip to Mexico inspired by Valeria Nougues OP.
We hope for many creative responses to our Annual Gathering 2008 and the Muse theme that seems to weave it s way into our every day.
The Creative Process is truly an Easter thing!
Blessing,
Jude Bloch, OP
DIA Board
******************************************************************************************
"Amaze your Muse" - a Muse thought from the Gathering Planning Commission:
Whatever the season, it's the right phase of the moon.
April is a blooming beauty of a month in Atlanta, GA. The Bradford pear, forsythia, cherry, dogwood, redbud, rhododendron and azalea elicit dropped jaws and audible gasps as each attempts to outdo itself this spring after a 2 yr. drought.
We each have our 'seasons'. Muse on the tilling, seeding, hoeing, growing, harvesting, fallowing and, yes, even 'drought' times of creativity. Are there sprouts and shoots that need just a bit of tenderness and nurture to flourish and bloom? Note 'inner birthings' of Spring's nudges.
Liz Sully, Planning Commission

Local Nun's Sculptures are CREATED IN GOD'S IMAGE, read the heading of the lead story in the Religion Section of the Grand Rapids Press on March 1, 2008. The article was primarily about how Phyllis Mronzinski, DIA Member, experiences the creative process. It is also about creating a life-size sculpture of Dominic de Guzman. A follow-up article in the Dominicans' publication, InWord, indicates that the sculpture made it to the foundry where a bronze statue will eventually be forged. Congratulations, Phyllis! Look for the full article on our new website soon.

September 08 DIA Update
Dear DIA Members:
First we send prayer and good, holy energy to our sisters and brothers in the paths of the recent hurricanes. Let's keep them close in mind and heart.
Secondly, the DIA Board has two long-awaited communications to share to you - a live website and a newly formatted E-newsletter. We are grateful for the energies expended by members and board members alike to have these two things come to completion. Please read on.
Sincerely,

Dear Friends,
It is here. The DIA website, www.DIArts.org, live and on the web!
This is very exciting! DIA Members now have the opportunity to preach through the arts on a much broader basis, globally! The DIA Board has fulfilled one of our goals as outlined in the Strategic Plan; and the public will have the opportunity to meet the talented people across the world who call themselves "Dominican Artists". We all are to be congratulated.
The web site is not all-inclusive when it comes to information, Member Events, etc. Information will be posted as it is received from you.
You will find the September, 2008 newsletter on the site (click on "Newsletter"). From now on this is how the newsletter will be sent to you, via the website. You will be alerted to each new newsletter by an email notice.
Soon you will receive information as to how to create your own profile for the website or how to have your profile created for you. In the meantime, you can be gathering photos of your work and one of yourself that you would like to have on the site (the photos need to be clear and either mail them to me or e-mail them to me in jpg format). You will want to make your biography, education and career information as succinct and as brief as possible.
If you have your own website we can link your profile with it quite easily.
Until then, enjoy your website. Share it with your congregation, link it to your congregation's site. Your friends and family will want to know about it too.
Thank you for your support and your patience this past year and a half!
Carol O'Connor OPA
Web Editor, www.DIArts.org
